“Missing You” is the 10th installment of Harlan Coben’s thriller series book-deal with Netflix, and you will find his typical cocktail of sudden disappearances, past secrets and lies. Is the series worth a must-watch, or should you give it a miss?

Storyline
Kat Donovan is a sharp detective in the UK’s Missing Persons division. She’s tough and successful, much like her celebrated cop father whose murder, years back, still haunts her. But things aren’t as exciting on Kat’s personal front —until her life takes a wild turn while scrolling through a dating app. She comes across the profile of her ex-fiancé, Josh, the man who ghosted her 11 years ago all of a sudden and there is a match. Feeling nostalgic, she sends him the song ‘Missing You’ from their past, only to be heartbreakingly blocked.
Kat’s life gets even more twisted when her father’s murderer, now on his deathbed, claims he was framed. When a lad approaches Kat while looking for his mom Dana’s whereabouts, she is shocked to learn that the lady was involved with the none other than Josh! Meanwhile, a sinister dog breeder is carrying out his plans at will, in a secluded farm.
Will Kat be able to uncover the truth behind her dad’s death? Why had Josh disappeared and why is he back on the social circuit now? Where is Dana?
Our critique
The series sets the stage well at the start, establishing Kat’s world that is filled with suspense and mystery. At just five episodes long, it manages to let the twists sink in, without rushing through. The pacing is just about right, and the narrative keeps you hooked.
However, not everything shines. Despite being a seasoned detective, Kat’s inability to trace Josh for over 11 years feels unreal. And the lack of usage of basic technology such as tracking IPs on the dating app—makes you question the logic.
The direction and editing are sleek, keeping the story tight and engaging. While a couple of farm scenes feel a bit unnecessary, the execution of the rest is good. The music and cinematography are add value to the overall atmosphere.
Screen Performances
The performances of the key characters keep you invested. Rosalind Eleazer nails it as Kat, portraying her determination and vulnerability. Ashley Walters as Josh brings intrigue, and his chemistry with Rosalind is a highlight. Richard Armitage as Kat’s boss, Stagger, does justice to his role, while Mary Malone and Jessica Plummer shine as Aqua and Stacey, Kat’s besties.
Overall opinion
Though ‘Missing You’ carries the Coben signature, it doesn’t quite reach the level of some of his other works. Still, it is a decent watch for crime thriller lovers.
