Kankhajura is a 2025 Hindi crime thriller web series streaming on SonyLIV. A remake of the Israeli series Magpie, it is directed by Chandan Arora and produced by Ajay Rai. Is it worth watching?

Storyline
Ashu, who was convicted of murder as a teenager, completes his sentence in fourteen years through a deal with the police and returns to live with his elder brother, Max. Max is a successful builder in Goa, leading a comfortable life with his family and working on high-profile projects with two childhood friends who are also his business partners.
Despite being family, Ashu has always been treated as an outsider by the trio, sadly that continues even after his return. Ashu reconnects with an old friend and tries to support Max in his own subtle ways. However, as tensions rise and buried secrets begin to surface, Max’s seemingly perfect life starts to shake.
Our critique
The tagline of Kankhajura — “So fragile… yet so fatal” — perfectly encapsulates the essence of Ashu’s character: weak, quietly intense, and on a path to redemption. The series leans heavily on emotions rather than plot-driven thrills, which results in a narrative that occasionally feels slow for a thriller. However, its strength lies in the psychological vibes and the sensitive portrayal of sibling chemistry — the complex bond between a younger brother seeking validation and an older brother used to dominate.
The intrigue is sustained as the audience is constantly guessing Ashu’s next move. Some subplots feel unnecessarily stretched but yet the direction is sharp and engaging, particularly in the opening episodes, which set the tone effectively.
Cinematography is functional — it avoids the temptation of showcasing Goa’s picturesque landscape, keeping the focus on the story. The music is subtle, avoids being overpowering.
Screen Performances
Roshan Mathew delivers a solid performance as Ashu, portraying the character’s layered emotions with quiet brilliance. He keeps the viewer hooked, constantly switching between vulnerability and menace. His portrayal effortlessly overshadows even Mohit Raina’s Max, who nonetheless brings his characteristic charm and sincerity to the role.
Sarah Jane Dias is effective as Nisha, Max’s wife — smart, believable, and likeable. The supporting cast, including Trinetra Haldar, Usha Nadkarni, and Ninad Kamat, provide strong performances that round out the narrative well.
Overall opinion
Despite some pacing issues and a few underwhelming subplots, Kankhajura manages to engage. The gripping performances — particularly by Roshan Mathew — elevate the experience. While not an edge-of-the-seat ride, it’s still worth a watch.
