Review of Carry on: an airport thriller

“Carry On” is an action-packed thriller written by T.J. Fixman and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, set in the chaos of an airport on Christmas Eve. But does the narrative take off well and soar high enough to hold your attention? Let’s analyse.

Storyline

Ethan, a young TSA agent, was aspiring to be a cop. But at present, he is stuck in a mundane job and his girlfriend Nora is pregnant. Desperate to prove his worth, he takes on a baggage screening job at LAX during probably the busiest time of the year.
In the middle of the Christmas rush, Ethan’s routine day takes a sinister turn when someone hands him an earbud and a mysterious voice (of the so-called The Traveler) begins to threaten him. He is instructed to let a suspicious carry-on bag pass through smoothly. The stakes are high as Ethan is thrust into a deadly game, with the life of his loved one hanging in the balance. What’s in the bag? Will Ethan relent, or put up a fight?

Our critique

The film’s concept hooks you instantly. The pacing is tight, with moments of tension escalating at just the right time. A couple of subplots do feel unwarranted and slightly divert your attention, but they don’t derail the story. The camerawork and background music enhance the thrills.

Screen Performances

Taron Egerton delivers a strong performance as Ethan, honestly portraying his mix of love, fear, and dilemma. Sofia Carson as Nora is charming, sharing great chemistry with Taron. Jason Bateman as the enigmatic “Traveler” is a standout, while Danielle Deadwyler as Agent Cole adds action to the narrative.

Overall opinion

“Carry On” may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it delivers a simple, gripping narrative with solid performances and decent action. It’s the kind of movie you can sit back and enjoy without too much thinking, and carry on with life.
