Review of Devara Part-1: an action-packed sea-adventure

Devara Part-1, now streaming on OTT, is a Telugu blockbuster that stormed theaters in September, raking in over ₹500 crores worldwide. Written and directed by Koratala Siva, this action-packed sea adventure dives deep into the deep waters of greed, risk, and revenge.

Storyline

A deadly stretch of sea, known as the Red Sea, is ruled by fearless pirates (descendants of coastal warriors) who plunder ships to extract illegal cargo, working for the biggies. The pirates belong to the coastal villages consisting of four clans, one led by Devara while his rival but partner in crime Bhaira heads another. When Devara develops a conscience and bans the shady deals, Bhaira resists, sparking a deadly clash. Devara is attacked but he eliminates his foes and disappears. He continues to be a mythical guardian of the sea. Years go by and Devara’s son Vara grows up to be unlike his warrior father except for his looks. And then one day, Bhaira (taking his gang and Vara along) decides to hunt down Devara in order to restart the piracy and all hell breaks loose.

Our critique

Devara Part-1 kicks off with a bang! The first half grips you with its intense story, but the second half seems like it’s stalling for Part 2. There’s a clear attempt to recreate a Bahubali style cliffhanger, which some might find intriguing, but others may feel annoyed at the forced drama. Vara and his subplot with Thangam (who has an unreciprocated crush) adds little value to the story. The film also falters with underdeveloped narratives and characters—particularly Bhaira, whose arc deserved more attention and depth.

Screen performances

Jr. NTR is in top form, owning every frame with his charisma, action, and emotional depth. Saif Ali Khan, as Bhaira, starts strong but gets limited by the script, leaving audiences wanting more from his intimidating character. Jhanvi Kapoor, as Thangam, looks lovely but her role is too limited with no room to make impact. Zarina Wahab delivers as Devara’s mother, while Prakash Raj and others provide adequate support.

Overall opinion

A cinematic spectacle with stunning visuals and electrifying action, Devara – Part 1 would have been best experienced on the big screen. A tighter script and a stronger narrative could have elevated it to greatness. It’s an enjoyable watch nonetheless, but one that leaves you hoping Part 2 delivers on its promise.
